A San Antonio teen is going to prison for 20 years. He was one of three kids who carjacked Larry Brister in 2023. Brister was 80. He died from his injuries five months later.
Gabriel Miguel Urbano is 19 now. Police first charged him with murder and aggravated robbery. Court records show he pleaded no contest to two counts of aggravated robbery. No contest means he did not fight the charge. State District Judge Christine Del Prado found him guilty. She gave him 20 years on each count. He will serve both at the same time.
In exchange for that plea, the murder charge was dropped. So was one more robbery charge, court records show.
This is the second sentence handed down in the case. It is not the last one.
The attack happened on Feb. 11, 2023. Brister had gone out for dinner, the Bexar County District Attorney's Office says. Three teens carjacked him on the North Side. They beat him and left him in the street. He was hurt bad.
Neighbors ran out to help him. One of them was Bruce Bowen, the former San Antonio Spurs player. KSAT reported that Bowen was one of the people who stopped to help.
Brister lived through that night. But he never got better. He spent months in the hospital. About five months after the attack, he died.
"Mr. Brister deserved to spend his later years surrounded by his loved ones, not as the victim of a senseless and violent crime," Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a written statement. "While no sentence can undo the pain and loss experienced by his family, we hope this conviction provides a measure of justice and accountability."
Police arrested three teens after the attack. Their names were not released back then. All three were minors at the time.
Urbano was charged in a second robbery too. A man named Eduardo Jaramillo caught Urbano and a friend in a parking garage. The two were breaking into cars, the district attorney's office says. They pistol whipped Jaramillo. They held him at gunpoint. That is what the office says happened.
That friend was Zachariah Mander Aguirre. He is 19 as well. Aguirre pleaded no contest to a murder charge in July. He is serving 25 years.
Both men have to serve half their time before they can even ask for parole. For Urbano that is 10 years. For Aguirre it is 12 and a half.
A third teen was charged in the case too. His name is Miguel Acosta. He faces murder and robbery charges. KSAT reported in November 2025 that he was still waiting on a trial. He has not been found guilty of anything.
The wait has been rough on the family. KSAT reported that the Bristers were told the trials would start in early 2024. Then they were told early 2026. Then that slipped too. Sandra Brister is the widow. She told the station what her family wanted.
"We just want closure," she said.
She spoke straight to Aguirre in court at his sentencing in July.
"This killing was so unnecessary," she said.
She also told him she had prayed for him.
Carjackings are not rare in big Texas cities. What makes this one stick is the ages. The three who took his car were kids then. The man they took it from was 80. He was on his way to grab dinner. He never made it home.
Urbano is in state custody now. The case against Acosta is still open. His name has not shown up in any sentencing news.
