A jury sent a San Antonio man to prison for 28 years. He fired a gun through a glass door. One man died. That man's brother was shot too.
James Nathan Malo is 41. A Galveston County jury found him guilty of murder. It also found him guilty of a gun attack on the second brother. Jurors gave him 28 years for the murder. They gave him 10 years for the attack. They added a fine of $7,500. The Daily News in Galveston County reported the verdict on August 28.
The man who died was Richard Samora. He was 30 years old. His brother Roland Samora lived. Malo is married to their sister. All three men were family.
Kemah is a small bay town near Houston. It sits a long way from the Rio Grande Valley. Families rent homes there for weekend trips. This trip ended in blood.
The family met at a rental house in October 2025. They came to fish. Then the brothers and their sister got into a fight. Malo locked the two men out of the house.
Video told the rest. Prosecutors said the tape showed Malo walking to his car. He got a gun. That was about 10 minutes before the shots.
The brothers came back to a rear door. Prosecutors said the men wanted their things. Richard Samora spoke on the tape.
"You going to shoot me? Put that gun up," he said.
Malo fired through the glass. Richard Samora was shot in the face. He died two days later. Roland Samora was shot in the shoulder. He had surgery.
Kemah police gave more detail back in 2025. Police Chief Raymond Garivey said the brothers had been told to leave that night. He said they came back and tried to kick in the door. Police found a pistol at the house.
"All of the people involved are family members," the chief said. "This was an isolated incident. There is no ongoing threat to the community."
A federal officer was staying close by. He was off duty. He held Malo at gunpoint until Kemah police got there.
Police did not book Malo that night. They let him go. The proof was not clear yet. Detectives kept working. They watched video. They talked to people who saw it.
Ten days later the district attorney's office took a murder charge. A warrant went out. Police found Malo in San Antonio on October 22. Kemah detectives worked with San Antonio police to get him. His bond was set at $250,000.
At trial, Roland Samora took the stand. He said there had been no violence before that night. Not between Malo and the brothers.
A Kemah detective, Alonzo Soza, questioned Malo. Malo said he did not think the brothers would hurt anyone. Prosecutors used those words at trial.
The trial was short. Both sides rested on a Wednesday. Jurors came back the next morning. They said guilty on both counts.
Then came the part where the jury picks the punishment. Prosecutors showed the panel Malo's record. He had been put on probation in Bexar County. That old case was for choking a former girlfriend.
Two prosecutors tried the case. Quinten McConico is the chief assistant district attorney. Brianna Stark is an assistant district attorney. The DA's office thanked three agencies. Those were the Kemah Police Department, the FBI, and the Galveston County Sheriff's Office.
The shots were fired on October 12, 2025. Richard Samora died two days after that. The trial ended more than 10 months later.
Malo is not just accused now. He is convicted. A jury heard the proof and made the call.
