A stepson came home with friends on a Saturday night in Rio Grande City. According to a criminal complaint, his stepfather pulled out a handgun and fired it close to his head.

Deputy Jesus Rios was sent to the home at about 9:40 p.m. on Sept. 26, 2026. The stepson told him that Saul Camacho-Gomez loaded a handgun, pointed it at him, and fired near his left ear.

The complaint describes the gun as a tan 9mm pistol.

The stepson's mother tried to pull the two apart. The complaint says Camacho-Gomez pushed her. It says he then fought with the stepson and hit him in the face with a fist.

El Tejano is not naming the stepson or his mother.

Camacho-Gomez faces two charges, each in its own complaint.

The first is aggravated assault of a family or household member with a weapon. It is a first degree felony. It is the most serious level of felony below a capital crime. It can mean 5 to 99 years, or life, in prison.

The second is assault causing bodily injury to a family member. It covers the push against the mother. It is a Class A misdemeanor. That can mean up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

The first charge uses the words "serious bodily injury" in its charging language. The story in the complaint describes a punch to the face. It does not describe a serious injury. El Tejano is reporting only what the complaint describes.

The complaint does not say if the bullet hit anything. It does not say if the stepson was hurt by the shot. It does not say what started the argument, or whether anyone else was in the home.

It also has a date problem. The deputy's story says the call came on Saturday, Sept. 26. The charging language says Sept. 27. El Tejano is using the date in the deputy's story.

The copies El Tejano reviewed are marked as copies. The sworn block is blank. That means El Tejano cannot confirm from the copies alone that the deputy signed under oath before a notary.

Texas law says a firearm is a deadly weapon. That is why a fight inside a family can become a felony when a gun is involved.

Still, the State has to prove its charge. A judge or jury will decide whether the facts match the law.

El Tejano did not find a bond amount or a court date in the documents. A judge will set the first hearing. Camacho-Gomez will be able to enter a plea and answer both charges.

These are accusations from police complaints. They are not proof. Saul Camacho-Gomez is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
