McAllen police have arrested an Edinburg woman they say sold the drugs that killed a 39-year-old man back in April. Vanessa Denise Rico, 48, now faces two felony drug charges. It took police five months to build the case against her.

The case started on April 10, 2026. McAllen officers got a call about an unresponsive man in the 1600 block of Dove Avenue. When they got there, they found him dead. A forensic exam later found that recent drug use killed him.

Investigators kept working the case after that. The McAllen Police Department says the trail led them to Rico. Police say she was the source of the drug that killed the man.

Detectives got a search warrant for Rico's home in Edinburg. Inside, police say they found 1.85 grams of cocaine. They also found equipment used to package drugs for sale.

A magistrate at McAllen Municipal Court reviewed the evidence police gathered. The judge found enough probable cause to sign two arrest warrants for Rico.

The first warrant charges her with manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance causing serious bodily injury or death. That is a third degree felony. It can mean two to ten years in prison. Police tied this charge directly to the man's death.

The second warrant charges her with manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1, specifically cocaine. That is a second degree felony. It can mean two to 20 years in prison. This charge comes from the cocaine that police say they found inside her house.

Each charge carries its own $5,000 bond, McAllen police say. That means Rico would need to post $10,000 total to get out of jail while her case moves forward.

Rico was arrested on September 23, 2026, five months after the man died. She was arraigned the next day, September 24, in McAllen Municipal Court. A judge sent her to the Hidalgo County Jail. As of the arraignment, she had not posted bond and remained locked up.

The five month gap between the death and the arrest shows how much work goes into a case like this. Police have to run a forensic exam, trace the drugs back to a source, and get a search warrant signed off by a judge before they can make an arrest. All of that takes time, especially when the person who died can no longer speak to what happened.

The McAllen man who died has not been named by police. He was 39 years old.
