A Brownsville man is in jail. State troopers say he hit a man with his Jeep and drove off. The man he hit died.
His name is Eduardo Hernandez. He is 24 years old. He lives in Brownsville.
The crash was early Sunday, September 6, 2026. It was about 12:02 a.m. It happened on State Highway 4 in Brownsville. That road is also called Boca Chica Boulevard. The spot was just west of FM 511.
Troopers say a silver 2024 Jeep Wrangler was going west. A man was walking in the road. The Jeep hit him. The Jeep did not stop.
A witness saw the man in the road. He died right there at the scene.
Troopers went looking for the Jeep. They found it a few hours later. They found the driver too. They took Hernandez to the Cameron County Jail.
The charge is failure to stop and render aid in a crash that killed someone. The law is simple. A driver must stop and help. If he does not stop, and a person dies, it is a felony. In Texas it is a second degree felony. That can mean 2 to 20 years in prison. It can also mean a fine of up to $10,000.
The man who died has not been named. Troopers held back his name. They want to tell his family first. His age has not been given.
No bond amount has been made public yet.
The case is still open. Troopers are still at work on it.
Everyone is presumed innocent until proved otherwise.
