AUSTIN, Texas. A car ran off the road and into a fence on Sunday afternoon. Police walked up to it. A man was sitting inside. He was badly hurt. He died right there on the street.
Austin police are calling it a murder. They also say the person they want walked away before the first patrol car pulled up.
It happened Aug. 30 at about 2:58 p.m. The spot was the corner of Briar Hill Drive and Woodland Avenue in southeast Austin. KXAN put the scene near Burton Drive, a block over.
The 911 call came in as a shooting or a stabbing. That is how the Austin Police Department wrote it in the news release. Officer Aaron Townsend called it a "shoot/stab hotshot call."
Police still have not said which one it was. They have not said the man was shot. They have not said he was stabbed. The release only says he had "apparent trauma."
They have not named him either. The release calls him an "unidentified male." No age. No hometown. Two days later, that is still all police have put out.
Here is what police did put out. A photo. Witnesses saw someone run from the corner right before officers got there. The department pushed out that picture and asked the city to look at it.
They say he is a young Hispanic man. Late teens or early 20s. Slender. About 5 feet 6 inches tall. He had on a black long sleeved top that covered his skin. Black pants. And a black backpack, worn on his chest instead of his back.
Police do not know which way he went. Townsend said they also do not know how the two men were connected. They may have known each other. They may be strangers. Police are not guessing out loud.
This is Austin's 39th homicide of 2026. Even that number took a fix. Police gave reporters a different count on Sunday. They sent out a correction Monday morning and made it 39.
Homicide detectives spent hours on that corner. So did crime scene experts from the city forensic lab. They knocked on doors. They talked to neighbors. They pulled video off cameras nearby.
The case is still open, the release says. Nobody has been arrested.
People who live around that corner say they are worn out. Lexi Vera lives close. She told KXAN a stabbing happened right at her own apartment complex not long ago. She came home from work, took her dog out, and found tape and blood on the concrete.
"It is pretty nerve-wracking and it makes me nervous to even just take my dog out," Vera said.
She told the station she liked the place when she moved in. Then the months went by. Now she plans to leave when her lease runs out.
Kai Cotton lives in the area too. She told KXAN the killing did not shock her.
"I'm not so shocked because it just happens constantly in Austin," Cotton said.
KXAN also reported another killing about half a mile from that corner roughly two months back. A mechanic was shot in a shopping center parking lot.
For now the file sits open with a case number and no name on it. The number is 26-2420956.
Police want to hear from anyone who was on that block Sunday afternoon. The tip line is 512-974-8477. You can also call Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477. That line does not ask who you are. You can leave a tip online at austincrimestoppers.org.
El Tejano readers live hours south of Austin. But the ask is the same one deputies make down here in the Valley. Somebody saw that man walk away. Police are waiting on that call.
