A woman in McAllen made a hard call on April 1. She dialed 911 on her own son.
She told police her son, Peter Christopher Harris, 42, had not slept in two weeks. She said he was having an episode and refusing to leave her home. She needed help.
McAllen Police Officer Francisco Castillo responded to the 200 block of East Jay Avenue.
What happened next ended with both men in the hospital.

When Castillo got there, he got into a struggle with Harris.
Harris stabbed the officer in the hand.
Castillo fired his weapon. Harris was shot.
Both men were taken to the hospital.

Harris was booked on April 9 after he recovered enough to be processed.
He is charged with attempt to commit capital murder of a peace officer. That is one of the most serious charges in Texas. It can mean 5 to 99 years in prison, or life.
His bond was set at $1 million.
Harris has a criminal record going back to 2001. Most of his prior cases involve drug possession.

Officer Castillo survived. The McAllen Police Department has not released details on his current condition.
Harris is facing the capital murder attempt charge in Hidalgo County.
