A Florida woman is accused of stealing a sheriff's patrol car. Deputies found her far up the road. She had on a vest with that sheriff's logo.
Her name is Shannon Marie Dillon. She is 42, of Fort Lauderdale.
It happened Tuesday night.
Shortly after 9 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications got a report. A marked sheriff's car was gone. That is what the Broward Sheriff's Office says.
The car was a Dodge Charger. It was parked in a public lot at the Public Safety Building. That is in Fort Lauderdale.
The sheriff's office says the deputy was on duty. It says he is the one who reported his car missing.
At about 9:30 p.m., police put out an alert for the stolen car. It was heading north on Interstate 95.
Troopers joined the search. So did deputies and police from St. Lucie County.
Troopers found the car sitting empty. It was on an I-95 exit ramp in Port St. Lucie. The ramp goes to Gatlin Boulevard.
Police set up a ring around the area. A Port St. Lucie police spokesman, Brandon Martinez, said they were told the woman might have access to a gun.
He said police sent in a police dog and a drone.
Deputies found Dillon in the area. She had on an outer ballistic vest. That is the kind of vest cops wear. It had the Broward Sheriff's Office logo on it.
Body camera video shows deputies with guns out. They told her to get on the ground. She was arrested without a fight.
The exit ramp stayed closed while crime scene investigators worked the scene. It opened again at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Dillon was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail. One charge is grand theft of law enforcement equipment. She is also charged with unlawful use of a police badge or police car.
She has more charges there too. One is for having four or fewer ID items she was not allowed to have. One is for drug gear. One is for a convicted felon having a weapon or ammo. One is for driving on a suspended license. And one is for resisting an officer without violence.
Investigators said she has two Broward County charges too. Both are for grand theft. One of them is for theft of police gear from an emergency car.
The Broward Sheriff's Office put out a statement. It said nothing is missing from the car. It praised the teamwork of all the agencies. It said that teamwork brought a peaceful end.
The statement said its Internal Affairs Unit is looking into it. They want to find out just what happened. They also want to know if any of the sheriff's rules were broken.
Police have not said how the car was taken.
Dillon went before a St. Lucie County judge on Wednesday.
She smiled and laughed as the judge read the charges. More than once, he asked her to pay attention.
"Please listen to me ma'am," the judge said at one point.
Later, Dillon spoke to the judge. "Thank you very much judge, and I will not disappoint you," she said.
The judge said Dillon has many past convictions. He said she was already out on bond on a Broward County case.
He gave her a public defender.
"You need to speak with them and tell them about any mental health issues you have," the judge said.
Investigators from both sheriff's offices are still on the case.
Everyone is presumed innocent until proved otherwise.
