A girl has died after a stabbing in Zapata County. The man accused in the attack now faces a murder charge.
The Zapata County Sheriff's Office shared the news. It says the girl was hurt in a stabbing on Sunday, Oct. 25. She is a juvenile, so El Tejano is not using her name. The sheriff's office says she has died.
The suspect is Francisco Javier Torres Jr., 20. Captain Andrew Treviño of the sheriff's office says Torres was first charged with aggravated assault of a family or household member. That charge says a weapon was used and that the person was badly hurt. It is a first-degree felony. That is one of the most serious levels of felony in Texas.
Now the charge has gone up. The sheriff's office says it has been raised to murder. Murder is the charge when someone is accused of killing another person.
The sheriff's office says the girl and Torres knew each other. It has not said how.
The Texas Rangers are helping Zapata County with the case. The Rangers are part of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Here is what we do not know. We do not know the time of the stabbing. We do not know where in the county it happened. We do not know how it happened. We do not know how old the girl was.
All of this comes from the sheriff's office. We have not found other sources yet. We will pass along more when we confirm it.
Everyone is presumed innocent until proved otherwise.
