A joke on Facebook turned deadly on a Corpus Christi street. Police say the fight on July 8 left one man dead. Now a 19-year-old sits in the Nueces County Jail on a serious charge.

The case is a hard lesson for South Texas families. A joke online can turn into real danger fast. Neighbors in Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley share the same Facebook groups and neighborhood pages. This story shows how quickly a fight over a post can turn deadly.

Officers went to the 4500 block of Moravian Drive around 10:43 a.m. on July 8. Someone called police to report a man pointing a gun at people. A Chevrolet Silverado truck pulling a trailer was stopped in the road. Police said the people involved knew each other. This was not a fight between strangers.

When officers got there, they found Athanasios "TJ" Stamatakis lying in the street. He was 32 years old. His right leg was almost cut off below the knee. He was not breathing right. Officers started CPR. Paramedics rushed him to CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline Hospital. He died there.

Court papers say the fight started over a Facebook post. A man had posted a dark joke about epilepsy. Stamatakis' family has epilepsy, and they were hurt by the joke. The man told police he did not mean to hurt anyone. Stamatakis was not satisfied. He wanted to talk to the man face to face. That day, the man was working a landscaping job on Moravian Drive.

Stamatakis and 19-year-old Victor Moreno drove to the job site in a Chevrolet Tahoe. Witnesses told police Stamatakis pointed a black handgun through the Tahoe's window at the man. The man was sitting in his Silverado truck. He told officers he thought he was about to get shot. He drove forward, and his truck hit the Tahoe.

Police say Moreno then grabbed what looked like a hammer. He smashed two windows on the Silverado during the fight. Security cameras on nearby homes caught the whole thing on video. The footage backs up what witnesses told police.

The video shows the Tahoe pulling up next to the Silverado. Stamatakis gets out and walks toward the driver's side window. He is pointing what looks like a handgun. Moments later, the video shows Moreno smashing the rear and front windows on that side of the truck. Then the Silverado drives forward. Moreno gets out of the Tahoe, picks up the handgun off the ground, and runs north on Moravian Drive.

Two witnesses picked Moreno out of separate photo lineups. Corpus Christi police arrested him on July 9, one day after the fight. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. That is a serious felony charge that can mean years behind bars. He also faces a charge of criminal mischief, which covers the broken truck windows. Moreno is locked up in the Nueces County Jail. His bail is set at $250,000.

Corpus Christi sits about two hours up the coast from the Rio Grande Valley. Families here share the same Facebook groups and community pages as folks in Starr, Hidalgo and Cameron counties. A joke that seems small on a phone screen can reach real people fast. This case shows what can happen when an online argument spills into the street. It is a warning for anyone who thinks a comment fight will stay online.

The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Stamatakis' death. Police have not said whether Moreno or anyone else will face more charges tied directly to the death. For now, the charges cover the gun and the broken windows. They do not cover the killing itself.

Detectives say the investigation is still open. They have not said if the man who was driving the Silverado will face any charges. No word yet on when the case could go before a grand jury.
