An 18-year-old Edinburg man sits in jail this week. Deputies say he is tied to a shooting. The shooting hurt a woman outside a nightclub in rural Edinburg.
Rodrigo Castillo was arrested Friday, July 24. He faces one charge. It is called aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. That charge is serious. It can mean 2 to 20 years in prison. A judge set his bail at $100,000.
The case comes from a shooting 12 days earlier. Gunfire at a club can turn a fun night into a scary one fast. Families in the area want their kids to be safe on a night out. A shooting outside any club raises hard questions for the whole community.
The shooting happened on July 12. It was about 12:50 a.m. Deputies got 911 calls about shots fired. The calls came from South Raul Longoria Road in rural Edinburg. That is where the El Antro club sits. Deputies said the shots were fired in the club's parking lot.
Deputies got to the scene fast. They found a woman hurt. Her injuries were not life threatening. She went to a local hospital for treatment and care.
The sheriff's office said the woman was not hit by a bullet. Deputies did not say how she got hurt.
The sheriff's office made the arrest public on Monday, July 27. Jail records show Castillo was booked Friday. He stayed in jail all weekend, held on the $100,000 bail.
Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is a serious felony in Texas. It is a second-degree felony. A conviction can bring 2 to 20 years in prison. It can also bring a fine up to $10,000. That is why bail can run high in a case like this one.
Club parking lots in rural Hidalgo County have seen gunfire before. Deputies patrol these spots at night. But shootings can still happen fast in a busy lot, even with patrols nearby.
Twelve days passed between the shooting and the arrest. Deputies have not said what happened during that time.
The sheriff's office says the case is still open. It is not yet clear if more arrests are coming or when Castillo will next appear in court.
El Tejano will update this story as new facts come out.
