A teenager ran out of a store in Cornelius, Oregon. Then that teen called the police. Deputies came back and searched the building.
They say they found a hidden room inside the business complex. They say the crimes they are looking into happened in that room.
The man in jail is Daniel Le Brun. He is 42. He lives in Cornelius. It is a town in Washington County, a long way from the Rio Grande Valley.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office is running the case.
It started on Thursday, August 27. It was about 8:30 at night. A person under 18 got away from a store and called Cornelius police. The teen told police about an attack inside.
Police went to the Plaza Grande shops on North Adair Street. Deputies say Le Brun would not come out. He locked himself in for hours.
Deputies say he had knives. They say he also had several guns of the "less lethal" kind. Those guns are made to stun, not to kill.
A SWAT team showed up. Negotiators tried to talk him out. Deputies flew a drone to watch the building.
At about 1 in the morning on Friday, August 28, deputies took him into custody.
Le Brun then swallowed a large amount of medicine, deputies say. They say it was enough to kill him. He was taken to a hospital and stayed there for days.
On Tuesday, September 1, doctors let him go. Deputies booked him into the Washington County Jail.
He is charged with attempted murder. He is charged with first degree assault. He is charged with first degree sex abuse. He is charged with unlawful use of a weapon.
Two Portland area outlets also list more charges. KPTV and the Forest Grove News-Times report first degree kidnapping and first degree unlawful sexual penetration.
One thing needs to be clear. Many headlines said "murder." That is not the charge. The charge is attempted murder. Nobody died.
Then came the search of the building.
Detectives went through the shops. They found a room hidden inside the complex. The sheriff's office says that is where the alleged crimes took place.
Deputies would not say what else was in that room. A sheriff's official told KATU only this: "What the investigators found was pretty concerning."
The same station quoted a sheriff's official on how the case hit. "This is a really disturbing call. Alarming would be another way to put it."
This story does not name the young person. It does not print details of the alleged abuse. Those details help nobody.
There is some confusion about the shop itself.
Some news outlets called it a jewelry store and named it Blue Sapphire Jewelry LLC. Portland stations KPTV and KATU named a different business. They called it Crossroads Gaming, a game and memorabilia shop in the same complex.
There is also confusion about what Le Brun did there.
The sheriff's office first called him the owner. Then it backed off. Deputies later said he was only tied to the business. He was not the owner. The Forest Grove News-Times reported that he spent time at the shop but did not own it or work there.
Deputies say his link to the store is still being checked.
Now detectives are looking for more kids.
They believe Le Brun had a way to meet children through the business. They think there may be more victims out there.
The sheriff's office asked parents to sit down with their kids. Ask if they ever spent time around him. Ask about the store. Ask about anywhere else.
Anyone with information can call detectives at 503-846-2500. The case number is 50-26-12158.
So why should a Valley reader care about a small town in Oregon?
Because of the shape of it. A shop kids like. A back room. A grown man who is always around.
Detectives found that room after a teenager called the police. That is the part worth keeping.
Le Brun is in the Washington County Jail. No bond amount has been reported. No trial date has been reported.
A charge is not proof. Everyone is innocent until a court says otherwise.
