Milo Yiannopoulos backed Donald Trump for years. Now he says he is sorry he did.
The British writer, 41, sat down with Piers Morgan this week. The talk ran on the show "Piers Morgan Uncensored." ICE had just put him on a plane to Britain. He told Morgan the arrest scared him.
"If I had any clue that anything remotely like this was even possible, I would never have got involved in supporting Trump in the first place and I'm very ashamed that I did," he said.
His case matters here. Valley families deal with ICE every year. Most never get a TV interview. But the rules that moved him out are the same rules they face.
Here is what the record shows.
The Department of Homeland Security says he came here legally. He landed in New York City on May 14, 2019. DHS says he then stayed too long.
"He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation's laws," DHS said.
A visa is a permit to visit. It has an end date. Staying past that date breaks the rule. That is not a crime case. It is a civil case in immigration court.
News outlets report he did not show up for a hearing this year. On July 22, an immigration judge signed a final order of removal. That order is a court order to leave the country.
ICE agents took him on Thursday, August 28. They grabbed him at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Kenner, Louisiana.
He was held at an ICE center in Alexandria, Louisiana. Fox News calls that center a big hub for ICE deportation work.
He was gone the next day. ICE flew him to the United Kingdom on Friday, August 29. That is one day after the arrest.
A DHS spokesperson linked the arrest to air travel.
"This administration is working diligently to ensure that aliens in our country illegally can no longer fly unless it is out of our country to self-deport," the spokesperson said.
Yiannopoulos told Morgan the two days were rough. He said he was moved from a detention center to a jail. He said they moved him every three hours. He said it was done to stay ahead of his lawyers. He said nobody would tell him a thing.
He said it was "humiliating" and "physically degrading." He said, "It was frightening."
He said about 15 agents came at him at the airport. He said they chained his hands and his feet. He said he did not eat for 24 hours.
He also told Morgan he had no reason to overstay.
"I don't really do the right-wing provocateur thing anymore. I manage lawyers for a living," he said. "And I'm married to an American. There's no reason I would take a risk like this. I didn't need to overstay a visa."
DHS tells it a different way. The agency says he stayed too long. A judge ordered him out.
No outlet that covered the case reports a crime charge against him. This was an immigration case, start to finish.
Removal is not a jail term. Nobody goes to prison for it. But it does end your time here. And a removal order can make coming back very hard.
Yiannopoulos worked as an editor at Breitbart News. He was a loud voice for Trump in 2016. His campus talks drew big protests, including one at UC Berkeley.
He is now in the United Kingdom. He is British, so the UK has to take him. A country must accept its own citizens back.
