A woman told police she saw a man break into her Jeep on her home cameras. A short time later, officers found a man inside a Camaro at a different home. The owner of that home told police she did not know him.
Now Rufino Magaña Jr. faces three charges in Rio Grande City. Two are for burglary of a vehicle. The third is for trying to break into a car.
The facts in this story come from criminal complaints signed by a Rio Grande City police officer. These are claims. None of them have been proved in court.
It started with a camera
It happened on or about Aug. 29, the complaints say.
An officer was sent to a home on a call about a car break-in. A woman there said she watched it on her home security cameras. She said she saw a man break into her white 2025 Jeep Wagoneer.
The man on the camera wore a white shirt and blue jeans, the complaints say.
A man inside a Camaro
A short time later, officers found a man inside a black Chevy Camaro, the complaints say. The car was parked at another home. Police identified the man as Rufino Magaña.
Officers spoke with the woman who owns that home. They told her what had happened. She said she did not know Magaña, the complaints say.
Police then decided that Magaña had broken into both the Jeep and the Camaro, the officer wrote.
A third call
Then a third call came in. Police dispatch told officers a man had called from another home. He said a man had tried to break into his car.
That car was a bronze 2015 Ford Fusion, one complaint says.
The charges
Magaña faces two counts of burglary of a vehicle. One is for the Jeep. One is for the Camaro. The complaints say he broke in with plans to steal. Each count is a Class A misdemeanor. Each can mean up to a year in jail.
He also faces one count of attempted burglary of a vehicle. That one is for the Ford Fusion. It is a Class B misdemeanor. It can mean up to 180 days in jail.
What we do not know
The complaints do not say what, if anything, was taken from the cars. They do not say if Magaña was arrested that day. They do not list a bond. His age is not given.
The officer signed each complaint, along with a witness. On these copies, the spot where a judge or clerk signs is blank.
The documents do not give his side of the story. No lawyer for him is listed.
