A young man is now charged with murder for a head-on crash on Mustang Island. Corpus Christi police say he did it on purpose.

Liam Shannon is 23. He turned himself in on Tuesday, Sept. 29. He sits in the Nueces County Jail. His bond is $500,000.

The crash killed Jarrod Fangman. He was 59. He died at the scene.

Police say the two men did not know each other.

Murder is a first-degree felony in Texas. That can mean 5 to 99 years or life in prison.

The crash happened on Monday, Aug. 10. Police got the call at 7:10 p.m. It was in the 7900 block of Highway 361, near Beach Access Road 2. That is near Port Aransas.

Shannon was driving south. Fangman was driving north. Police talked to people who saw it. They said Shannon swerved into the other lane. The two hit head-on.

Shannon was badly hurt. Medics took him to a hospital.

At first, it looked like a bad wreck. Then police got new facts.

Those facts are in an arrest affidavit. That is a sworn paper police give a judge to get a warrant.

The affidavit says police got text messages four days after the crash. Names in that part of the paper are blacked out.

The affidavit says the texts "clearly indicated that the crash was not an accident but was intentional with the intent of Mr. Shannon to kill himself in the crash."

Police did not stop there. Traffic cops got a warrant for data from the vehicle Shannon drove.

The affidavit says that data showed no mechanical or technical problems with the vehicle. After that, police said they believed the crash was on purpose.

The traffic unit then gave the case to the police Robbery and Homicide team. Detectives got a murder warrant for Shannon.

Shannon did not wait to be caught. A court paper says he went to the Nueces County Courthouse. He told a deputy his lawyer told him to turn himself in. Deputies checked and found the murder warrant. They took him to the county jail.

Police have laid out their side in the affidavit. Shannon has not had his day in court. A judge or jury will decide if the state can prove the charge.

For one family, the loss is already real. Fangman was just driving north on a summer evening. Police say the man who hit him was a stranger.

That stretch of road had a deadly week in August. This crash was one of two that week. Those two crashes killed three people on Highway 361. State troopers stepped up patrols on the highway after that.

Corpus Christi police say the case is still open. They are still looking into it.
