Five people ended up in the hospital after a Border Patrol vehicle ran a stop sign in Starr County. The crash happened Monday afternoon near La Grulla.

Texas state troopers say a Border Patrol unit was driving through the crossover, the gap in the highway median that lets vehicles turn around. The agent wanted to cross over and head west on US 83. Investigators say the agent did not stop at the stop sign there. The truck pulled into the road and hit a Chevrolet Traverse.

The crash happened around 2:46 p.m. It happened on US 83, west of FM 2360, near Border Patrol Lane by La Grulla.

A driver and three children were riding in the Traverse. All four were hurt and taken to the hospital. The Border Patrol agent driving the unit was hurt too and also taken to the hospital. That makes five people hurt in one crash.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash. DPS has not said how badly anyone was hurt. DPS has not released the names of anyone involved, including the agent.

The stop sign sits where Border Patrol units cross the median to change direction on US 83. Federal agents use that crossover every day. Regular drivers share that same stretch of highway with them.

El Tejano will update this story as DPS releases more information.
