A family fight in Beaumont ended with a man dead on Thursday night. Police say Nolan Jones was shot and killed. They say he tried to take a gun from Jaylin Bass, 18. Bass is charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is in the Jefferson County jail.
Beaumont Police Officer Chancellor Van Houten said the fight broke out at about 9 p.m. Thursday, October 22. It was at a home in Beaumont. Police call it a domestic violence case.
Police say Bass pointed a gun at a family member. Jones stepped in and tried to take the gun away. Police say Bass then fired several shots. The shots hit Jones. He died.
A probable cause affidavit gives more detail. That is a police statement, made under oath, that tells a judge why police think a crime happened. According to the affidavit, an argument between a 43-year-old woman and Bass turned physical. She told officers it began with words. Then Bass became physical, she said. She said he punched her with his fist.
The affidavit says Bass then showed a handgun and pointed it at her. "During the physical assault, Jaylin knowingly brandished a handgun, pointing it at her, which caused her to fear for her life," it says. It says the fight went on. It says Bass fired a gun several times and the shots hit Jones.
The affidavit says police gathered evidence at the scene. It says the evidence points to Bass shooting Jones on purpose. These are claims in a police document. A court has not decided them.
Police say Bass was taken to talk with Beaumont detectives. Then he was taken to the county jail and booked.
Early on, police said all the people involved were held at the scene. They said Jones' next of kin was told. They said the case is still open. They said more news will come as they learn it.
Police have not said how Jones and Bass are related. They have not said what started the fight.
Everyone is presumed innocent until proved otherwise.
