A 15-year-old girl is charged with murder. Police say she helped push a man off a moving train in Chicago. He fell onto the electric rail. Another train hit him. He died from his injuries.
The attack happened on a CTA Red Line train. It was near the 69th Street station. Kyle's family says he did not know the people who attacked him. It was a random attack.
Kyle Bickham, 29, was riding the train home from work. He worked long shifts at an Amazon warehouse in Cicero. He was heading back to Lansing, where he lived.
Police say three people pushed Bickham off the moving train. This happened on Monday, September 7. He landed on the third rail. That rail carries the power that runs the trains. Another train hit him. The county medical office said he was killed.
Officers arrested the 15-year-old girl four days later. That was Friday, September 11. She is a minor. Because of that, police and the court are not sharing her name.
She faces four charges. The first is murder. The second is mob action. Mob action means more than one person worked together to hurt someone. The third charge says the killing happened during another serious crime. The fourth charge says she hurt a transit worker during the attack.
She went before a judge in juvenile court on Saturday. The judge found enough evidence to move forward on every charge. The judge ordered her held in custody. She had to go back to court Monday, September 14.
Police say two other people helped push Bickham off the train. Officers have not arrested them yet. They are still looking for them.
Bickham's family says he had nothing to do with the group that attacked him. He was simply riding the train home. His grandmother asked how anyone could do something so cruel. "If you're that evil, to open a door and throw somebody, a live person, out, what's wrong with you?" she said.
His father remembered him as a caring man who wrote poetry. "He loved writing poetry. He loved us. He loved both of his nieces, his brothers, his sister," he said.
Bickham's mother, Latanya Bickham, said the family still has no answers. "There's a lot of questions that we have and we still have no answers. We need help, we need direction, and we need these people to turn themselves in," she said.
The family set up a GoFundMe. It will help pay for Bickham's funeral. Police are still asking anyone who saw the attack to come forward. The search for the other two people goes on.
Everyone is presumed innocent until proved otherwise.
