Police caught a woman wanted in a deadly hit and run. She was trying to come back into Texas.

Eagle Pass police arrested Melanie Cuellar, 29, at the port of entry. That is the crossing point between Eagle Pass and Mexico.

Cuellar had a warrant out of El Paso. The warrant charges her with collision involving death. That means a driver hit someone and drove off. The person died.

El Paso police say Cuellar hit and killed Maria Lopez, 77. Lopez was walking when it happened. The driver did not stop.

El Paso police looked for Cuellar for more than a year. They say she hid in Mexico for about 14 months to dodge arrest.

Eagle Pass sits on the border in Maverick County. That is deep in South Texas, far from El Paso. But it is where Cuellar finally got caught. She was trying to cross back into the country.

Cuellar now faces that charge. Police expect her to go back to El Paso to face the case in court.

Lopez's family waited more than a year for an arrest. Her death set off a long search. It stretched from El Paso all the way to South Texas.

Everyone is presumed innocent until proved otherwise.
