A drug deal turned deadly in a San Juan H-E-B parking lot on July 10. Now two young men face murder charges.

The shooting happened around 11 a.m. at the H-E-B Plus store in San Juan. That is a busy shopping spot in Hidalgo County. A killing in broad daylight at a grocery store lot is rare here. It has shaken people who shop there.

Police say Hervey Marin De Leon, 40, was shot several times during a drug deal. He died from his injuries. San Juan police arrested two suspects in the killing.

Michael Anthony Lopez, 18, is charged with murder. He also faces separate charges in another case. Those charges are aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery.

Juan Samuel Olguin, 19, is also charged with murder in the H-E-B shooting.

The victim's brother, Jorge De Leon, said he watched it happen. He told police Lopez climbed into the back seat of their vehicle. Then Lopez opened fire on Marin De Leon. Police later found the gun used in the shooting. It was at Lopez's home in Pharr.

Police say Olguin drove the getaway car. Officers say it was a black Dodge Charger. Police say Olguin admitted he was waiting to get paid $10,000 for his part in the deal.

Another person riding in the vehicle got hurt in the shooting. That person did not go to the hospital by ambulance. A private vehicle took them instead, according to police.

San Juan Police Chief Leandro Sifuentes spoke about the case. "An injured occupant of the vehicle was transported to the hospital in a privately owned vehicle," Sifuentes said. "This is an isolated incident, and there is no public threat."

Investigators have not closed the case. They say they have not ruled out more suspects. That means more arrests could still come.

The San Juan Police Department led the investigation. McAllen police also took part.

Drug deals gone wrong are not new to the Rio Grande Valley. Small deals can turn violent fast. What makes this case stand out is where it happened. H-E-B parking lots stay packed with shoppers most hours of the day. Families push carts and kids climb out of cars all day long. Gunfire broke out close to where they walk.

Lopez is 18. Olguin is 19. Both are barely adults under Texas law.

Both suspects were arraigned Friday, July 19. A judge set bail at $1 million each. That is a steep bail amount for this region. It means both men will likely stay in jail. They would need to post the full amount to walk free before trial. Or they would need a bond company to cover it.

For now, both Lopez and Olguin remain locked up in Hidalgo County. The case is still open. Investigators have not ruled out more suspects. Court dates will follow as the case moves through the system. The community around the H-E-B Plus store in San Juan is left to process a killing. It happened in broad daylight, in a place families visit every day for groceries.
