A wrong-way driver slammed into another car head-on near Palmview on Friday night. The crash killed two people. It left two more fighting for their lives in the hospital.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the wreck happened around 9:26 p.m. on August 14, 2026. It happened on Texan Road, south of Freedom Avenue, just north of Palmview.

Wrong-way crashes are a real danger on Valley roads. Many rural roads in the area have just two lanes, one for each direction, with nothing splitting them but a painted line. That makes a wrong-way mistake far more dangerous than on a highway with a wide median. Palmview sits in Hidalgo County, close to McAllen and Mission.

DPS says a blue Ford Fusion was headed south on Texan Road. A man drove the car. Another man rode as his passenger.

At the same time, a silver Chevrolet Malibu was headed north on Texan Road. But the Malibu was not in the northbound lanes. It was on the wrong side of the road, driving straight into oncoming traffic. A man drove the Malibu. A woman rode with him.

The Malibu hit the Fusion head-on.

Two people died right at the crash site. DPS named them as Brianna Yatziri Saucedo, 19, of Mission, and Jonathan Tellez-Sosa, 25, of Penitas.

Saucedo rode in the Malibu, the car that was going the wrong way. Tellez-Sosa drove the Fusion, the car that got hit.

The crash hurt the other two people bad. DPS says the Malibu's driver and the Fusion's passenger both went to South Texas Health System McAllen. DPS lists both of them in critical condition. That means their injuries are serious enough to kill them.

DPS has not said why the Malibu ended up on the wrong side of the road. Troopers have not said if the driver was drunk, high, tired, or on a phone. No charges have come out yet.

This crash is a hard reminder for South Texas drivers. Head-on wrecks are among the most deadly kinds of crashes, since both cars hit each other at full speed at once. Drivers on rural roads at night should always watch for headlights coming toward them in the wrong lane. If you see one, pull over and slow down right away.

Palmview is a small city, but it sits in one of the fastest-growing parts of Hidalgo County. New homes and businesses keep going up nearby.

DPS troopers are still working the case. Troopers have to look at skid marks, the damage on both cars, and any witnesses who saw the crash before they can say for sure what happened.

Right now, DPS has not released a cause for the wrong-way driving. It is not clear yet if the driver of the Malibu will face charges once the investigation wraps up. This remains an open investigation.
