Texas prison officials released a new photo this week. It shows Karmelo Anthony. He is the young man who killed Austin Metcalf. Metcalf was a junior at Frisco Memorial High School. He died at a track meet last year. The new photo shows Anthony with a shaved head. He wears a sleeveless prison shirt.

Anthony is 19 years old now. He was 17 when he stabbed Metcalf. He is serving 35 years in prison. He is locked up at the Wallace Pack Unit. That prison sits near Navasota. Navasota is outside Houston.

This case is not over. Anthony's lawyers are fighting the guilty verdict. They say he deserves a new trial. The case has drawn attention across Texas. The stabbing happened in April 2025.

Court records show Anthony's legal team filed a notice of appeal. It is a one-page paper. It says Anthony cannot pay for a lawyer. It asks the court for a free, court-appointed attorney. That lawyer would handle his appeal.

The stabbing happened on April 2, 2025. It happened at a rainy track meet. The meet was at a Frisco school stadium. Witnesses said people asked Anthony to leave a team tent. They said this happened about 15 times that day. Anthony told those nearby, "Touch me and see what happens." Metcalf answered, "I'm not going to fight you." Anthony then stabbed Metcalf. He used a pocket knife. The blade hit Metcalf's heart.

A jury found Anthony guilty of murder. The verdict came on June 10, 2026. Jurors took about three hours to decide. They could have picked a lesser charge. That charge was manslaughter. It carries up to 20 years. They chose murder instead. They talked for more hours after that. Then they gave Anthony 35 years in prison.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis spoke after the verdict. He said, "The process delivered accountability." He thanked the "brave kids" who took the stand. They told the jury what they saw. Frisco ISD also gave a statement. It said, "We respect the judicial process and will continue to support our students with compassion and care."

Austin Metcalf's family spoke out too. His mother, Meghan Metcalf, said, "For our family, this is our reality." His father is Jeff Metcalf. He described his grief. He said, "It is rage. Pure unfiltered rage."

The case took a new turn this month. A different judge stepped in. Judge John Roach was removed from the case. A defense motion raised doubts about his fairness. The motion pointed to an interview. In it, Roach backed the jury's guilty verdict. The motion also pointed to a public letter Roach wrote. A visiting judge came from San Antonio. His name is Judge Sid Harle. Harle agreed to remove Roach. Harle said Roach's fairness "might reasonably be questioned."

Judge Harle now oversees the case. Anthony's lawyers also asked for a brand new trial. They say Roach's courtroom rules hurt Anthony's rights. Those rules included a gag order. They also banned electronics in court. The lawyers also say the jury got the wrong instructions. And they say prosecutors would not let Anthony testify about self-defense.

A hearing on the new trial request happened this month. It took place in Collin County. No final ruling has come out yet. That is true for the new trial request. It is also true for the appeal itself.
