According to official records obtained by El Tejano, the following details come from criminal complaint documents filed in Starr County.
A Rio Grande City man broke into a home, took cash from a table, and ignored a child who told him to stop. Now he faces up to 20 years in prison.
Ramon Lopez, 31, of Rio Grande City, was charged with Burglary of a Habitation. That is a 2nd Degree Felony under Texas Penal Code 30.02(c)(2). A conviction can mean 2 to 20 years in prison.
The incident happened on the night of April 22, 2026, going into the early hours of April 23. It took place in Rio Grande City, Starr County.
Deputy Javier Trevino, Badge Number 142 of the Starr County Sheriff's Office, worked the case.
Lopez entered the home without permission. Inside, he found $30 in cash sitting on a living room table. The money belonged to a young girl who was in the home.
The child told him to leave the money alone. He took it anyway and left.
Later, the resident of the home confronted Lopez directly. He gave back only $10. He said he had already spent the rest of the $30.
Burglary of a Habitation in Texas means a person entered a building without the owner's permission. It does not require that a door was broken. Entering without consent is enough to trigger the charge.
The fact that the cash belonged to a child and that a child was present when Lopez took it adds weight to the case. Both the resident and her daughter were witnesses to what happened.
Lopez has not been convicted of any crime. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
