The last man charged in a deadly 2022 shooting outside a McAllen bar is going to prison for 38 years.

Avan Ruben Mendoza is 21 years old. He is from Donna, Texas. Court records show he pleaded guilty to murder on Sept. 14, 2026. A judge sentenced him that same day.

Mendoza killed 22-year-old Ryan Michael Serna, court records show. He is the third and final person sentenced in this case.

The shooting happened just before 2 a.m. on Oct. 2, 2022. It happened outside a bar called No Manches Wuey. The bar sat at 211 South 17th Street in McAllen at the time.

Serna's girlfriend called police. She said he had been shot. Officers rushed to the scene.

Court papers say Serna was shot in his upper body. He took multiple gunshot wounds. Medics rushed him to South Texas Health System McAllen. Serna died four days later, on Oct. 6, 2022.

Court records lay out what happened that night. Witnesses told police three men left to get a gun that night. They were Mendoza, Alejandro Gomez, and Joel Gonzalez Jr. Other people in the group stayed behind. They kept watch on Serna, court records show.

Video cameras nearby caught part of it too. The video shows Gomez and other people planning to hurt Serna, court papers say.

Two other men already faced justice for Serna's death.

Joel Gonzalez Jr. is 23 years old. He pleaded guilty to Serna's murder on Nov. 14, 2025. A judge gave him 38 years in prison, the same term Mendoza got.

Alejandro Gomez is 22 years old. Court records show his trial was set for June. But a jury found him guilty on March 20, 2026. He got 18 years in prison.

Not everyone linked to the case faced murder charges that stuck. Prosecutors dropped murder charges against the other men. Court records give the reason. They cite a "lack of affirmative links to establish necessary elements of offence for successful prosecution." In plain words, prosecutors did not have enough proof to tie those men to the killing in court.

Serna was 22 years old when he died. His death came after a night out at a McAllen bar turned deadly. Nearly four years later, all three men charged in connection with his murder have now been sentenced.
