A jail phone call broke this case wide open. Bexar County deputies say Martin Sanchez Jr., 58, shot and killed a man on San Antonio's Northeast Side. He said so himself on a recorded jail call. Now he faces a murder charge.

The man who died was Andrew Locke, 31. He died early Monday, August 10. It happened near Waterside Drive and Crestway Road, close to Windcrest. Locke's mother was in the car too. She got shot several times. She lived. She is now in stable condition.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar held a news conference on Wednesday. He said deputies got a big break. They listened to a jail call Sanchez made after his first arrest. "During the course of that jail phone call, he clearly stated several times that he shot this man that eventually died," Salazar said. That call helped deputies get a murder warrant.

Deputies say this all started as a mix-up. Sanchez was riding in a white Volvo. Two other people were with him. Robert Barnett, 38, was driving. Kyle Erin Torres-Carcovich, 45, rode along too. Salazar says all three had been near the same suspected drug house as Locke's group. But the two groups never met. They did not know each other.

Both cars left around the same time. They just happened to drive the same way. Salazar says the people in the Volvo got scared. They thought Locke's black car was following them. It was not.

"We believe that they were just happening to go the same direction," Salazar said.

Locke sat in the back seat of a Mitsubishi Lancer. His mother sat up front. She was driving him to the hospital. He was having a mental health crisis, deputies said. The two cars pulled up next to each other near Waterside and Crestway. That is when deputies say Sanchez opened fire. Court papers say Barnett heard Sanchez say, "I'm going to light them up." Then the shots started. About 10 rounds hit the Mitsubishi. Locke died right there. The driver of Locke's car was not hurt. He is helping investigators now.

A license plate camera caught the white Volvo about a minute before the shooting. It was less than a mile from the crime scene. That clue helped deputies find a home tied to the car. It was on Clay Oak Drive. Deputies later found the Volvo at a car dealership. It was a loaner car. Deputies arrested Barnett and Torres-Carcovich right there.

Deputies also got gas station video. It was taken about 40 minutes after the shooting. The video shows Sanchez going through the back seat of the Volvo. He seems to throw items in a trash can. Deputies searched that can. They found spent bullet shells inside. That is what led to Sanchez's first charge. It was evidence tampering.

At first, all three suspects faced smaller charges. They were each charged with failing to report a felony. Sanchez also faced the tampering charge. Then came the jail call. Deputies heard Sanchez admit to the shooting. They took it to a judge. They got the murder warrant. Sanchez was charged with murder on Wednesday.

Barnett now also faces a tampering charge. Torres-Carcovich still faces the failure to report charge.

Deputies found the gun on Wednesday. It was hidden between two homes. That spot was near West Silver Sands Drive. It is a few miles from the San Antonio airport. Deputies believe Sanchez used a semi-automatic handgun.

The case is not over. Salazar said deputies have searched five homes so far. They also searched several cars tied to the case. More arrests could still come, he said.

This shooting is a hard reminder for South Texas families. A wrong guess about who is following you can turn deadly fast. Neighbors near Waterside and Crestway want more patrols in the area. For now, Sanchez sits in the Bexar County Jail. His case now heads to court.
