A Fort Worth father is behind bars on a capital murder charge. Police say he beat his 9-year-old daughter to death with a belt after she wet the bed.

Marquise Dayshun Anderson, 35, was arrested Tuesday, June 24. He sits in the Fort Worth Jail on a $750,000 bond.

The victim was Joanna Jordyn Shoulder. She was 9 years old. She wanted to be an astronaut, a doctor, and a brain surgeon all at once, her family said.

It started in the early morning hours of Feb. 8. Fort Worth Police got a call around 3:15 a.m. to a home on the 1900 block of Daniel Street in South Fort Worth. They found CPR being given to Joanna on the floor. She was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center. She died at the hospital.

Doctors at Cook Children's told police the little girl had bruises all over her body. Homicide detectives got an autopsy and started digging into what happened.

It took four months to build the case. The county medical examiner ruled her death a homicide about a week before Anderson's arrest. The cause was blunt force injuries all over her body.

The medical examiner found at least 30 bruises on Joanna's torso and legs. Many matched the shape of a belt. Doctors also found bleeding under her scalp and around her spine.

Anderson spoke to detectives. He admitted spanking Joanna with his hand six times. He said he then hit her with a blue cloth belt with a metal buckle six or seven more times. He said she smirked at him. He said the first spanking had not worked.

After the beating, he put her in the tub to soak. He told police the bath lasted about three hours. He said she seemed sleepy, thirsty, and slurring her words. He went to get her water. He came back and found her hanging over the edge of the tub and throwing up. She stopped responding. They called 911 about 10 minutes later.

A woman at the home told police Joanna had been visiting her father. The woman said she performed CPR while waiting for help to arrive.

Joanna's mother told police her daughter was healthy and could bathe on her own. Her uncle said Joanna had only recently started visiting her father on weekends.

Brandon Shoulder, Joanna's uncle, spoke to NBC 5 after the arrest. He said the family had waited for this moment since the night Joanna died.

"My prayers been answered," Brandon Shoulder said. "I knew since day one that he did it."

He described Joanna as a bright, loving girl who was in third grade.

"She was very smart. The teachers loved her. She's always willing to bring a teacher apple," he said. "She wanted to be an astronaut and a pediatrician and a neurosurgeon at the same time."

Brandon Shoulder said he hopes Anderson gets the harshest punishment the law allows.

"I'm actually hoping he get that needle," he said. "I feel like he was sick. I think the brutality on which he did what he did is unforgivable in my eyes."

He said Joanna's mother has been harassed online by people who blame her for what happened.

Anderson faces capital murder for the death of a child under 10. In Texas, that can mean life in prison with no chance of parole, or the death penalty. It is not yet clear if he has a lawyer.

The case is still moving through the courts. No trial date has been set.
