An Edinburg mother is facing some of the most serious charges in Texas law. Her two young children died inside a burning SUV on San Antonio's West Side.
Marlene Vidal is 34 years old. Cops arrested her back in May 2026.
On August 6, a Bexar County grand jury indicted her. A grand jury is a group of citizens who look at the evidence. They decide if a case is strong enough to go to trial. This grand jury said yes. They handed up seven felony charges against Vidal.
Two of those charges are capital murder of a person under 10 years old. Capital murder is the most serious murder charge in Texas. It applies when the victim is a young child.
She also faces one charge of capital murder of multiple persons. That charge covers cases where more than one person died.
The grand jury indicted her on two counts of injury to a child with intent. In plain words, that means hurting a child on purpose.
She also faces a charge of arson. Arson means setting a fire on purpose.
The last charge is tampering with evidence. That means messing with evidence connected to a crime, to hide what really happened.
Vidal is sitting in jail right now. Her bond is set at one million dollars. She must pay that much money to get out. If she cannot pay, she stays locked up while her case moves through court.
She is due back in court in San Antonio.
Bexar County court records and news reports confirm the seven charges. The case is still moving through the courts. Cops have not released new details beyond what is in those records. An indictment is not a conviction. It is a formal step that sends a case toward trial. Vidal's case will now move forward in Bexar County court.
