August was a rough month for food safety. Stores pulled dozens of items. Some of that food may still sit in your kitchen right now.

The FDA logged recalls from July 30 to August 31. The USDA put out 6 recalls and 1 health alert. All 6 got a Class I tag. That is the top risk level. It means the food could make you very sick. It could even kill you.

A good number of those items sold in Texas. Here is what to look for.

Salata Dressings pulled its Jalapeno Avocado Dressing. The worry is salmonella. It sold at H-E-B stores in Texas from July 13 to August 5. Check the best by date on the bottle. The bad ones read 11/05/2026, 11/13/2026, 11/18/2026 or 11/25/2026.

Central Market pulled some lots of Jaime's Spanish Village Jalapeno Ranch. That one is not about germs. The jars hold eggs. The label does not say so. That is a real risk for anyone with an egg allergy. The lot number is on the base of the jar. The bad lots are 69, 86, 108, 113, 116 and 121.

A Florida firm called Corte Argentino USA pulled 29,628 pounds of raw beef. The beef came from Argentina. It never got the second check U.S. law calls for. The boxes went to sellers in Texas and Florida. The label reads Frigorifico Gorina. The cuts take in top sirloin butt, eye round and knuckle. No one has said they got sick.

An Austin firm made the list too. Indus Foods does business as Gangothri Foods. It pulled 1,626 pounds of pickled goat and chicken in jars. The jars never got a USDA check. They sold in stores, in restaurants and on the web. Each jar holds 8 ounces. Look for Gangothri Goat Pickle and Gangothri Chicken Pickle. The Gongura goat and Gongura chicken jars are on the list too.

The rest of the list went out past Texas.

Publix pulled GreenWise Organic frozen blueberries and mixed berries. The worry there was E. coli. That one made 12 people sick. Eleven were in Florida. One was in Georgia.

Everything Sprouts of Minneapolis pulled alfalfa sprouts. It pulled other sprout cups too. The FDA tied them to salmonella and to a rough strain of E. coli. The count hit 55 sick in 15 states. Four went to the hospital.

Boticelli Foods pulled Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter. Tests showed it might hold salmonella. No one got sick from that one.

Food To Live pulled green powders. That takes in moringa, kale and SuperGreens. They sold on the web all over the country.

Martina mangoes came back over salmonella. They sold at Walmart stores in four states. Those were Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The dates were August 10 to August 21.

The Hampton Grocer pulled Lacnola Lactation Granola. Salmonella was the reason. It sold on the company site and on Amazon.

Not every recall was about germs. Dreyer's pulled a run of Outshine Fruit Bars. The reason was glass in the box. That takes in the 6 count strawberry, watermelon, grape, tangerine and black cherry bars. The 24 count mix pack is on the list too. Those sold at some Walmart and Target stores.

City Foods of Chicago pulled 3,215 pounds of pastrami and corned beef. Listeria was the reason. Look for Midamar sliced pastrami round. Look for Bea's Best cooked corned beef brisket. Look for Kirsch Delicatessen Style corned beef brisket.

Pet owners have a list of their own. Northwest Naturals pulled two frozen raw chicken dog foods. Salmonella and listeria were the reason. Fromm pulled two canned dog foods over bits of metal.

Most of the month's noise came from one bad thing. Jalapenos from Mexico held salmonella. Salads, bowls and burritos made with them got pulled. They came off shelves at H-E-B, Kroger, Walmart and Albertsons. The CDC counted 431 sick in 32 states as of August 19. Fifty seven of them went to the hospital. If you think you bought one of these, do not guess. Pull the jar or the box out. Read the lot number. Then check the notice from the firm or the government. The FDA and the USDA both post recalls. So does the Consumer Product Safety Commission. H-E-B, Walmart and Target each keep a list too. The notice tells you if your lot is a match. It also tells you how to get your money back.
