Laredo police arrested an off-duty Border Patrol agent early Saturday. Cops say he hit a guard while getting walked out of a bar.

Kevin Jose Ortiz-Rosario is 27. He now faces a felony charge. Police say the fight broke out as guards and cops walked him out. He got booked into jail. He posted bond hours later.

This arrest is getting extra attention. Ortiz-Rosario works for U.S. Border Patrol. That agency has a big presence in Laredo. The border city leans on it every day. So an arrest of one of its own agents becomes news fast.

Police say officers got a call at 1:53 a.m. on July 25. The call came from a bar. It sits in the 6500 block of Arena Boulevard. Police say a disturbance broke out inside. Guards asked cops to help remove an aggressive customer.

Cops and guards then walked Ortiz-Rosario out together. Police say that is when he hit a guard. Cops arrested him right there.

Laredo police charged him with assault on a security officer. Under Texas law, that is a felony. It can mean 2 to 10 years in prison. State law treats a hit on a guard doing their job as more serious than a normal fight.

Cops found out Ortiz-Rosario is a Border Patrol agent. He was off duty at the time. Border Patrol bosses got told what happened.

Ortiz-Rosario got a $10,000 bond. He paid it the same day. Then he walked out of jail.

Security guards face real risks on the job. They break up fights. They remove people who will not leave. Many stand alone between mad customers late at night. This charge shows Texas law takes those risks seriously. It does not matter who gets accused.

Laredo sits right on the border. Federal agents here carry a lot of trust from the town. Border Patrol agents are trained to enforce the law. They are trained to keep people safe too. When an agent faces a charge like this, even off the clock, it raises hard questions. Who watches the watchers?

This case now moves through the Webb County courts. No court date has come out yet. It is not known if Ortiz-Rosario has hired a lawyer.
